EXTREME weather is here to stay. Are your trees prepared for it? What used to be extreme, seems to be the new norm. Extreme drought, extreme wind events, extreme heat. Trees are slow-growing, woody plants, and need time to adapt. We can improve their tolerance to these extremes, and improve the likelihood that they will survive these events. This talk is geared toward improving tree growing conditions to best foster optimal health. This optimal health & structure is key for trees as they experience heatwaves, drought conditions, and wind events. We will discuss in detail the biology of trees, how heat and drought affect them, what is going on vascularly, and how prolonged stress can set them up for secondary issues, such as pathogens and insect infestations. Learn about easy management practices that can "buffer" the trees and help to reduce the stress. Healthy trees, like healthy people, are better able to defend themselves from stress and decline. Also, how do we improve tree architecture and structure to tolerate wind events. Science and research has developed strategies that we can employ to reduce the likelihood of large branch or tree failures. Learning these strategies is easy, and there are great resources that can help you articulate this to your clients. This webinar is practical, full of great science and approaches that you can easily employ with your clients. As a Board Certified Master Arborist and Tree Risk Assessor instructor, I want you to have practical advice that can be easily digested and which you're able to use to enhance your trees, landscape and tree installations, design, and tree and landscape management.

Lisa Smith

Lisa Smith is a Registered Consulting Arborist #464 and owner of The Tree Resource, a southern California tree-consulting firm, providing all aspects of tree management and preservation. She began twenty-eight years ago, working for one of the nations largest tree contractors, providing arboricultural programs for projects throughout southern California, working in many arenas of the tree industry, from installation, large-scale maintenance, IPM (Integrated Pest Management), pruning guidelines, and risk management as a Board Certified Master Arborist and Qualified Tree Risk Assessor.

She enjoys providing educational opportunities for industry professionals and affiliate green groups, including teaching for the UCLA Extension Landscape Architecture pro-gram. As past president of the Western Chapter of the International Society of Arboricul-ture, Lisa also remains active on the board.
