Participants with learn how to convert lawns to meadows. Lawns are, for the most part, high maintenance, wasteful, and bad for the environment. As the effects of climate change bears down on our environment, meadows and natural lawns will play an increasing role. Meadows can help with water harvesting and can play a significant role in biofiltration and bioswales.
Participants will also see a green road installation. Green roads and green parking lots are the future.
Participants will see how I create meadows and natural lawns. They will follow various meadows from before, during, and after planting. Along the way, we will discuss the challenges and pitfalls of meadow making and meadow maintenance.
We will focus on the best new grasses and sedges, and point out the workhorses of successful meadows for California gardens.

John Greenlee was the founder of Greenlee Nursery, the oldest specialty grass nursery on the West Coast. He is the author of The Encyclopedia of Ornamental Grasses and The American Meadow Garden. John currently creates meadow gardens with his own landscape design firm, Greenlee & Associates.
John has been creating grass ecologies in public and private gardens for thirty years, such as LA's Norton Simon and the Getty Museum, Disney's Animal Kingdom in Florida, and the San Diego Zoo. He has worked as an advisor to landscape architects including Pamela Burton, Andrea Cochran, HM White Site Architects, Peter Walker and Partners, and James Corner Field Operations. He has designed private gardens for Diane Keaton, Katherine Bigelow, Ellen DeGeneres and Portia DeRossi, Ed Harris, Tea Leoni, and Steven Spielberg.
